Leelanau County Michigan

Leelanau County, Michigan has nearly 100 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline and over 30 square miles of inland lakes and rivers – a true water-lover's paradise. The sandy-bottomed inland lakes, including Big and Little Glen Lake, North and South Lake Leelanau, Kehl Lake and Lime Lake, offer ample opportunities for swimming, fishing and boating.

Leelanau has taken a lead in preserving its natural beauty with organizations such as the Leelanau Conservancy, which is dedicated to the preservation of county land and water resources. Of course, there is also the 70,000-acre+ Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore where you will find miles of trails for year-round recreation. In the summertime, there are also dozens of golf courses, hiking paths, parks and the 15-mile-long Leelanau Trail for outdoor enjoyment. In the fall, our abundant sugar maples and other trees provide amazing color. In winter, the peninsula receives a fair amount of snow, great for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling. Downhill skiers will find well-groomed, scenic runs at the Homestead in Glen Arbor. Springtime means morels, and the National Lakeshore and other woods provide excellent hunting grounds for them.

Leelanau County leads the world in tart cherry production and hosts a burgeoning wine industry. Numerous farm markets sell fresh produce in season, and several innovative local businesses – including Stone House Bread, Leelanau Cheese, Grocer's Daughter Chocolates and Cherry Republic, among others – produce high-quality local products. Diverse dining opportunities also abound.

The peninsula has many charming towns and villages, each with it's own unique character: Cedar, Empire, Glen Arbor, Lake Leelanau, Leland, Maple City, Northport, Omena, Peshawbestown and Suttons Bay. Four public and three private schools with small class sizes consistently provide a level of education above the state and national average. All in all, it's a delightful area to call home!
